The Genoa City Police Department Facebook page reached 500 likes today. It’s quite the milestone for the size of the community we serve. Let’s put this into perspective: based on our last census, that would mean approximately 16% of our community like us on Facebook. We thank you for that!

Moving on, Facebook gives us a unique opportunity to "humanize" the police department and communicate with the community in way that our society accepts. It helps the community recognize Law Enforcement Officers can communicate with the public in a positive light instead of the occasional negative contacts, e.g. speeding ticket, barking dog complaint, etc.

Finally, Facebook can also be used as a great tool for officers to use for requesting tips for crimes in and surrounding communities. This resource is also valuable for warning and or alerting the community regarding suspected criminals and missing children.

With all this said, I invite you to also join our free alert network NIXLE. Nixle uses SMS "text messaging" and email to alert subscribers about emergencies such as missing children, crimes in the community, and in some cases impending bad weather. It’s completely free to subscribe and easy. All you have to do is send a text to the number 888777 and in the message type our zip code 53128, press send and you’re done!

All in all, remember we want your likes for a reason. It helps us, help you! Feel free to contact us at any time with your concerns or questions.

As many of you know, Country Thunder is fast approaching. Because of the huge crowds the event brings, you can expect to see more Police Officers out on patrol to deter criminal acts and protect our community. With that said, we cannot be in every place at once. If you see something that looks suspicious or is out of place, please don't hesitate to call. Our non-emergency number is 262-279-6252 and can be called at anytime. Of course if its an emergency call 911 immediately.

July 3rd, 2013

I want to wish our residents a happy and safe 4th of July! Please use care and caution if you choose to enjoy “legal fireworks”. From the sounds in the evening I have been hearing some residents are enjoying “Illegal Fireworks”. I would be a hypocrite if I were to say I do not like the BIG Stuff. I want to make everyone aware my policy/ philosophy on Fireworks. Legal or illegal fireworks can get you in trouble if you handle them with negligence. If you keep the debris cleaned up, have a water source available and are enjoying fireworks while not impaired, you will most likely get a warning due to a complaint being generated by another citizen. Citations can run (approximately $172.00) or criminal charges (Fine up to $1000.00) based on officer discretion.

I expect and know I will hear fireworks on or around the 4th of July. Please be a respectable neighbor and pay attention to the time. No tolerance will be given after the 4th of July.

Statistics: In 2011 the State of Wisconsin reported 83 Fireworks injuries that required medical care. Fifteen people were hospitalized; 40% if those injured were children.

Hope you all have a safe and great 4th!

Chief Balog

Message from Chief Balog

In the past few months one crime was foiled when an alert citizen(s) called the Genoa City Police about suspicious activity in their neighborhood regarding trespassing on a vacant foreclosed home. These criminals (scrappers) were arrested and held accountable because of a split second decision to call the police about something that looked out of the ordinary. Continue to be alert and be aware.
